I have been watching and re-watchng the scenes in 5x08 featuring Martha and Jim at the precinct and I am beginning to feel that Gates is rather intimidated by Martha in a way that she isn't by Rick. Gates tried playing her usual PR spin routine with her and she wasn't having it. Martha did the one thing nobody in the precinct dared to do. Namely get right in her face and tell her she's full of it. Gates tried to tell her and Jim to go home and Martha for all intents and purposes told her to shove it, she wasn't going anywhere. (and Jim backed her play) But it was Gates' body language in the end scene that was the best tell to me that Martha really had her on the ropes. Obviously Iron Gates was simply not equipped to deal with Hurricane Martha. ;D

Couldn't agree more, Bug. LOVED how Martha stood up to her.

I think intimidated is too strong a word. Gates did not get her position by being intimidated by people. She's a strong woman in her own right. She just had to handle Martha differently as she quickly learned!!

Nice Bug!!!! Martha sets you up, can size you up like Rick and then cut you into little pieces for consumption. It did force Gates to check her ego at the door and drop the dragon lady schtick. And quite possibly help her understand Rick a little better. Nice name by the way..."Hurricane Martha" Sweet!!!!

Gates isn't afraid of Martha, but she was forced to respect her in a way she is not accustomed to. Martha is someone she cannot command or direct. Martha was both the immovable object and the irresistible force. Gates simply didn't know how to deal with her. Makes me wonder how formidable her own mother is.

There is a difference between intimidated and respect and I think Gates showed great respect for Martha and Jim. Yes I am sure she was hoping Martha would go home and allow them to contact them but I am sure as a mother, she didn't expect it. I didn't see her intimidated at all. Maybe she was a little shocked at how "to the point" Martha was but she I think she got a glimpse of where Castle gets his street smarts!

It would not surprise me if Martha reminded Gates of her own mother. Like she said to Kate in Rise : "If my mother shows up at the precinct you can call her 'ma'am ' call me Sir or Captain." I'm sure Mrs. Gates is formiddable in her own right. There is something about dealing with somebody's upset mother that hits that "shush! Mommy's talking" button in even Victoria Gates.

If Martha went up against a man I would have completely agreed with you. I am a very strong woman, so is my mother and her mother and her mother and I wouldn't want to be between them and info about their children but they don't intimidate me. I respect every one of those women.

What little she knew of Victoria Gates was likely filtered through her son. They did kinda get off on the wrong foot when Gates tried to "handle" her like she would the press. I can't say weather Gates respected Martha at first, but she learned some respect really quick. Martha is a force of nature when she wants to be. (especially where her family is concerned) That can be rather intimidating.
