Into the music world we go and it sounds like it might just be Espo's night to shine. I'm anxious to see if there's any mention at all of the PCA win. C'mon ABC! Give the show its due.
Loved this episode. I think Espo was amazing. I am glad we got to see his apt, and dig into his background. I am glad we got to see the bad boy in him in this one. He was truely on tonight. I enjoyed him very much. Altho we didnt see any Caskett moments we did see them giving looks and joking to each other about movies. I dont mind them taking the backseat so that the other characters can shine. I loved Ryans episode its one my top 5 shows of all seasons. I wont say this one ranks up there that high. It is however one the top ones of this season.. Truelly awsomee episode!!...
Hands down funniest bit was Kate smacking Espo in the head when he agreed with Castle that her movie choice was lame I wonder if that was improvised. Ryan was also a hoot in the early going when he was worried about his hair and fan-boying when he got the singer's autograph, and the 2 guys were funny at the precinct when Espo brought Joey in in handcuffs in the morning too. Great quip when Joey said he wanted the hot detective and Espo said HE was the hot one
Jon Huertas was outstanding! He played everything from the bad-ass to the concerned friend and I felt the emotions in every scene. I loved getting all of the back story on Esposito. I wonder if the rest of the team knows all of that. I was surprised that we got to see his apartment. It looked like a guy's pad who has a limited salary. I doubt if we'll ever see the kid again but I kind of hope there's a reference to Espo having an ongoing relationship with him sometime in the future.
Since it wasn't intended to be a Caskett centered episode, I didn't expect much. I liked that they arrived together the second or third morning and that Castle brought Kate coffee - although it was odd that there was a steaming cup sitting right bedside her on the desk. Guess she prefers what he brings I liked Espo giving Castle some kudos for raising a teenager. Stana looked gorgeous in that bright blue sweater and scarf!
I enjoy these episodes when one of the other cast members gets to shine. Castle is blessed with such a talented cast. Every one of them has the ability to carry a show. I do have to comment though, that this must have been one of the budget saver episodes because we didn't even see Penny or Molly or Susan at all. Since they get paid by the episode, this one probably freed up some money for others with more guest stars or special expenditures. It's a credit to the show that they can still put out an outstanding story with just the core people.

ITA...
Like I said in the viewing party I was impressed with the episode and felt that it flowed well. Much like last year's Kick the Ballistics, this episode was meant to let someone else besides Caskett shine. Esposito did just that... Tje scene with Shane at the end was unexpected and it could be seen as being out of character, but I believe that thugs like Shane will only take a threat seriously if you do it directly and without subtlety. Had Espo. done it without telling him exactly what he was going to do, Shane would have taken it as a sign of weakness. By being direct, Shane knows Espo. means business.
I totally agree, Nathanfan. This probably was a budget episode as we didn't see the other three lovely ladies, nor did we see anything at Castle's loft or Beckett's place. It was pretty much a strict procedural last night; stricktly case, and not a lot of extras. With Espo's character being more fleshed out, and his turn to shine. I really thought it was heartwarming, learning more about him, and the way he handled the boy. Mentors like that can make such a difference, and I like to think there are not only law enforcement, but others willing to come along side of troubled youth, and make a difference. What a great role model!
The scene where Kate smacked Espo and Ryan's hair business was totally hilarious! LOVE those little tidbits that are so "real".
I am not going to lie - I TOTALLY missed the Caskett displays of affection. The heartwarming look Kate gave Castle when talking about kids/Alexis was really sweet, and that was something right there. You know she knows what an awesome father he is, and maybe the thought crossed her mind that she really would love for him to be the father of her child some day. I loved it.
But, I am going to be just a tad critical here, and say that it would've been really easy to throw in a piece of Caskett love. Didn't have to be a kiss, but something. I know, I know, it was Espo's night, it was heavy on him, and casework, but even a wink from Castle to Kate, would've been awesome. A quick, "see ya tonight" with a little bit of "a look" from one of them....Something. Go ahead, throw rotten fruit, it's okay. lol... I DO miss when we don't get any Casket love. I agree...it was nice seeing them walk in together that third morning, leading us to believe they were together the night before. sigh.......... lol........
I agree about the coffee, too, Nathanfan. Kate had a steaming cup on her desk, but it probably wasn't a vanilla late, the way she likes it, and Castle didn't bring it. Of course, she prefers his.
Loved her in the blue with her hair up. It's nice to see the different expressions of color and hair that is done with these lovely people. The clothing and matching hues with our lovely couple were striking. In my opinion, with the color compliments to Rick & Kate, Castle's coat in the opening scene, Luke rocked this episode. And, Ryan's pink didn't bother me a bit.
As much as I love the Caskett elements of the show, this was a good reminder that they are part of a very talented ensemble cast and that any other character has the ability to carry an episode. Such fantastic storytelling!

IDK,Angie,I find I missed the FFS with it's signature Caskett moment. I'm not the biggest Esposito fan at The 12Th but he did a great job with his chance to shine.
I get the need for incorporation of supporting cast and back stories.
The episode felt off just a little because it didn't follow the season five formula with the exception of the look that came over Kate's face when Rick was talking about Alexis and his luck with her.
I'll have to rewatch this evening to see what I missed and compare what I saw with the SxS's.
I'm ashamed to admit that I fell asleep half way through this episode. Something I've never done before.I was very tired and have been down with the flu but I was shocked when I woke up and had to rewind the last half of the episode. Go figure.
"The Heart Wants What The Heart Wants" "Tell me you need me". "You,I just want you" " This is me...softly touching your face, pulling you in for a long, slow kiss" "For reasons to disturbing to mention,I find that hot!"

I rather enjoyed last night's episode with Espo getting to shine. He and Ryan have always been favorites of mine (well, not that there are too many people left aside from our DD), so I love getting to learn little things about them. Therefore I wasn't really bothered by that fact it wasn't Caskett centered, because we do have a great supporting cast, and sometimes you need to switch it up a little.
Espo was badass and I really liked seeing how he interacted with the Joey. I would really like to see him come back and that storyline continue! But I'm guessing it probably won't :/

Missed the Castle and Beckett interaction, but not too much. I LOVED getting to know a little more about Esposito. When he took Joey home with him, I told my hubby, "No way! We get to see where Espo lives!" That was cool! And, the back story about him being a juvenile delinquent. Liked learning that. Adds depth to his character. Those scenes with Shane - WOW! He doesn't flinch. Love Espo's sense of humor.
Enjoyed Kate's outfit - the blue shirt with the scarf and her hair up. Thought she looked great! And someone's gonna have to explain to me what they were arguing about when they got out of the car at the crime scene. Didn't quite understand the game. Love how Kate smacked Espo. LOL! Kevin's fangirling - funny!
Missed seeing Susan and Molly, but I totally get why they weren't there. Enjoyed getting to know Espo more.

They were arguing about movie choices. Castle's stance was that when alternating movie selections (his then hers then his, etc.) that if someone choose a truly terrible movie, that they then lose a turn as punishment for making the other sit through a terrible movie. Espo agreed with Castle, and then when he learned what the movie Kate chose actually was (Valentine's Day), he said that she should have to forfeit two turns.

Avoiding Jennifer Garner movies is usually a safe rule of thumb even if Anne Hathaway is in it. Never seen it so I can't really comment on the position of my thumb (up or down).
