Okay, so a lot of people have been asking about the missing spell check option on the new boards and after some lengthy research on the support forum, I've got a final answer on the subject...
Because most modern browsers already have their own built-in spell check systems and others have available add-ons that can be easily downloaded, and due to the issue of going through a complicated programming to add spell-check to the new version here with it being compatible for all browsers, the ProBoards designers opted not to include this feature in this new version of their site. They are also rather adamant that they will not be adding the feature on at any time going forward.
What they've said on the subject is that if you're using Firefox or Chrome, you already have built-in spell check systems within the browser itself. If you have an older version of either, you can update your browser from either the Firefox site (
click here) or the Google site (
click here), or you can look for a spell check add-on / plug-in from their list of add-ons / plug-ins.
Firefox already has the spell check automatically enabled. If you have Firefox and don't have an active spell check system, check your "options" area from the main menu and click on "options". Then click on the "advanced" tab and look in the middle of the window in your "Browser" options. You should see an option that says "check my spelling as I type". Make sure that option has a check mark beside it and this will enable the automatic spell checker.
Google Chrome also has a spell check option that can easily be enabled. Click on "settings" from your main menu and scroll to the bottom of that initial settings page. Click on "show advanced settings" and then scroll down to the "Languages" section. Click on the "languages and spell checker settings" and then click a check mark in the "enable spell checking" box on the bottom left of the pop-up window. Click on "OK" and exit the settings menu.
Now, the trick for Internet Explorer is that even the current version does not have a spell checker installed on it. The upcoming version does, but that version is only available if you're using Windows 7 or higher (ie: it won't be available for XP or Vista or anything prior to Windows 7). However, you CAN install an add-on / plug-in called "Speckie" that will work perfectly for any version of Internet Explorer. This is a safe and secure download and it comes highly recommended above any other options out there. You can check out the website (
click here) and download it from there.
As for Safari, I'm not a Mac user myself anymore, so I'm not sure if the spell check system is automatic or needs to be enabled, but from what I understand, Safari does have one in its current version. Perhaps someone with a Mac or iPhone could provide some assistance with that particular browser and let us know if it does have an automatic spell checker or if it has to be enabled (and, if so, how do you do that?).
I hope all of this will help answer your questions about the missing spell check option and that you find these instructions helpful in obtaining or enabling a spell check system for your own individual browsers.
