I need an explanation of three things:
1) dictation office - as in "she looked up at her friend from the computer in the dictation office" ("Heat Rises", chapter 2, page 32 - hardcover version of the book)
2-3) reporter-ese and circled wagons - as in "she didn't want to inspire some reporter-ese about circled wagons or tightlipped cops" (the same chapter, page 38)

Usually dictation is a tool of doctors to saye time. 2.reporter-ese...to speak in the language or style used by reporters i.e. dectective can you give this reporter a scoup on the case. 3.circled wagons... to come together is a defensive mode.i.e. they have circled the wagons and aren't saying anything about the case.i.e.in western days people in a wagontrain formed a circle as a place to fort up and hold off an Indian attack. Does this help?

Next one: big-shouldered gas hogs - as in: "Heat looked to see who drove those big-shouldered gas hogs in the city" - chapter 3, page 45.

It's a reference to a large, wide SUV that consumes a lot of gasoline

Thanks and the next one, what does " dinosaur VHS player" mean? A very old one or a very big one? "Old" would be the key here. VHS is long out dated since the DVD came on the sceen. VHS tapes were 7.5" x 4" x 1" so size is relative but varible by manufacturer.

I still have a lot of VHS tapes and no player to check what's on them...

Oh wait, we don't watch them though...no, wait again, we did watch a tape a couple of months ago! A friend who's an actor, and his wife came over for dinner and we watched "The Wrong Box." He knows Michael Cain. Oh man...I hate having to tell teel she's right.
